Air Serv plane cleaners strike at LaGuardia terminal

Air ServMYFOXNY.com is reporting that airplane cabin cleaners have set up pickets outside of a LaGuardia Airport (LGA) terminal over health and safety issues. The cleaners are raising concerns over possible exposure to the deadly Ebola virus.

The strike includes approximately 200 Air Serv workers who work in the domestic Terminal D of LGA airport. The workers began the 24-hour strike on Wednesday night.

The Air Serv workers, who also seeking to unionize, claim that they are sometimes exposed to blood, vomit and other hazardous bodily fluids. The striking employees claim that they are not given proper equipment to protect them from the exposure of viruses and diseases associated with what they clean up.

Air Serv employees allege that the number of cabin cleaners per job has been reduced by up to half and the time it takes to clean an entire plane has been cut from 45 minutes to approximately 5 minutes. The employees hope that by unionizing they will be able to negotiate better work conditions and reasonable allotted time to complete their duty.

Air Serv has not yet commented on how they plan to address the situation.
